Freddie Hubbard (1938-2008) es uno de los grandes trompetistas del jazz que apareció con fuerza a comienzos de la década de 1960. Diez años después grababa First Light, disco galardonado con el premio Grammy, todo un compendio de virtuosismo, sensibilidad y belleza, que despiertan sentimientos variados tras su escucha. Desde el título que da nombre al disco a la pieza que cierra: Fantasy In D, el repertorio se convierte en una cita ineludible con el virtuosismo cercano, que acaricia, del músico estadounidense, torrencial a veces, calmo otras, y que se acompañó en la grabación del elepé de un elenco, principalmente, de músicos jóvenes que ya apuntaban maneras de grandes del jazz, como ya era Hubbard en los primeros años setenta del siglo pasado.
