El arte de los doce compases

El sello discográfico Guimbarda, desde su fundación en 1978, apostó fuerte por el blues, desde el de corte acústico al electrificado, incluido algún nuevo músico de dicho género de entonces finales de los setenta y comienzos de los ochenta. 

Del clásico, pero inovidable guitarrista y cantante, Reverend Gary Davies, aparece en este apartado el disco grande titulado Live in Concert, recuperado en 1981 (España), nueve años después de la muerte del músico sureño. El disco se editó en 1978 en Estados Unidos y, en el Reino Unido, apareció un álbum en 1971 con algunas de las canciones del citado directo. 

El reverendo estaba en su medio en directo, como demuestra el repertorio de Live in Concert, porque el cantante y guitarrista vivió el blues desde los años 20 del siglo pasado en el sur de Estados Unidos y luego en posteriores décadas, lo cual le permitió un estilo particular a  la hora de tocar  la guitarra y de adentrase en diferentes géneros de la música tradicional de raíz negroamerica,

El  legado de Gary Davis queda recogida en múltiples grabaciones desde los viejos discos de los años treinta a las reediciones de sus obras por parte de discográficas que también apuesta por el blues. La obra del reverendo también cuenta con docenas de excelentes músicos, principalmente guitarristas acústicos, que adaptaron y adaptan sus mejores piezas.

El año 1981 sirvió también para poner en circulación Time, de Luther Allison, guitarrista y cantante de blues eléctrico muy viajado desde el sur a Chicago y otros lugares de su país, además de temporada en la influyente discográfica Tamla Motown, sus periódicos viajes a Europa para actuar de vez en cuando en prestigiosos festivales, en los que su forma de tocar y sus discos eran apreciados por el público del Viejo Continente.

Un año antes, en 1980,  Guimbarda sacó a la venta Cross Roads del armonicista de Harlem, Sugar Ray, un virtuoso de su instrumento que conoció el ciclo habitual de otros músicos de blues, es decir la calle, el trabajo como músico de sesión y el lanzamiento de sus propios discos. A todo eso hay que añadir la nota mediática de The Rolling Stones lo reclutaron para su participación en algunas grabaciones de un par de discos de larga duración de la mítica banda inglesa.

El blues es difícil de definir pero no tanto los diferentes estilos y personajes que fueron conformando dicho estilo desde el lejano tiempo de la esclavitud de los negros en Estados Unidos. Tras la sangrienta guerra civil o de Secesión, la figura del songster era habitual en el Sur de la gran nación llamada a convertirse en la primera potencia mundial. Muchos eran los negros que recorrían explotaciones, obras de ferrocarril, construcciones de diques e industrias relacionadas con la madera. Su misión, guitarra en mano u otro instrumento de cuerda (banjo, violín) y una voz potente, consistía en entretener a los trabajadores en los momentos que tenían unas horas de descanso. 

En competencia con el qüisqui, el juego y las mujeres, los songsters eran una especie de trovadores, en la mayoría de los casos negros, que cantaban historias cercanas cuando no hablaban de héroes encumbrados por el pueblo llano siempre presto a encontrar la figura de un líder al que idealizar y así escapar de la triste rutina. Sobre ese vida estilo de vida abundan las historias en la primera parte del recopilatorio The Songster Tradition Before The Blues, resumida en una docena de canciones, algunas de ellas clásicas del blues e interpretadas por grandes figuras como Mississippi John Hurt, Gus Cannon, Furry Lewis, Henry Thomas o LeadBelly, así como otros cantantes e instrumentistas menos conocidos que, lo dicho, en su juventud igual cantaban sobre arquetipos de hombres (Casey Jones, John Henry, Stackolee o Railroad Bill) o sobre drogas como la cocaína.

Indudablemente el disco resulta curioso porque se puede escuchar en plena juventud a muchos bluesmen, pues la mayoría de las canciones son de la segunda mitad de la década de 1920. Además de puede apreciar un estilo fundamental para entender el blues eléctrico, el r&blues, el country y el folk de los años sesenta en Estados Unidos. 

El blues también tuvo en el vaudeville y otros espectáculos propios de los músicos ambulantes, como los medicine show, un apoyo sobre todo para cantantes (hombres y mujeres) e instrumentistas -en este caso el violín se imponía sobre la guitarra- que recorrieron diferentes estados con sus montajes entre publicitarios, religiosos y musicales donde no faltaban tampoco historias que entretenían a las clases trabajadores cuando aún el cine y la radio estaban por alcanzar el rango de medios de masas. De la época de declive de esos estilos híbrido son por ejemplo Jack Kelly, Peg Leg Howell, Frank Stokes, Taylor's Kentucky Boyus, Bo Carter y Tom & Jimmie Tarlton.
