Los grupos vocales de los años cincuenta del siglo pasado, encuadrados en lo que se llama Doo Wop, son recordados periódicamente mediante la edición de discos antológicos como Doo -Wop. The Absolutely Essential, que en tres cedés recogen lo mejor de dicho género, cuyos inicios se sitúan a finales de los años treinta, pero fue en las décadas de 1950 y 1960, cuando mayor proyección comercial tuvo, sobre todo entre la juventud, al representar principalmente un estilo de canción urbana que no tenía que ver con la crudeza del blues o la complejidad musical del jazz. Sin embargo, el Doo Woop puede considerarse sin temor a equivocación en el hermano mayor del rock and roll y el soul, sobre todo en las zonas de influencia de población afroamericana y latina. Los principales grupos están ahí en los tres discos de The Absolutely Essential, cuyas canciones han puesto banda sonora a decenas de películas y al recuerdo de algunas generaciones.
