Stax fue la discográfica incluida, como Tamla Motown y Atlantic, en el trío hegemónico del soul norteamericano. Compañía sureña que inicio su andadura bajo la batuta de Jim Stewart, durante la década de los sesenta aglutinó un eficiente plantel de productores, compositores, músicos y cantantes que elevaron el soul a la categoría de clásico de la música popular, desde Memphis. Con motivo del medio siglo de su fundación, en el año 2007 se puso a la venta el doble cedé que recoge un total de medio centenar de canciones representativas de los mejores momentos de la compañía. Discos en los que aparecen, como no, piezas indispensables para entender la evolución de la música popular negra de Estados Unidos durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX, entre otras Green Onions, Respect, Hold On I'm Comin, Soul Finger, Do The Funky Chiken, Son Of Shaft, interpretadas por Booker T & The MGs, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, The Bar-Kays, Rufus Thomas o Isaac Hayes, una pequeña lista de un amplio plantel de compositores, músicos y cantantes atemporales.
